Hidden in the roof of a church, a 300-year old herb garret
houses the only surviving 19th century operating theatre, complete
with wooden operating table and observation stands, from which
spectators witnessed surgery performed without anaesthetic or
antiseptics.

Accessible facilities...
Due to the nature of the building, the only access to the Museum
is via a narrow, 32-step spiral staircase. Therefore, there is no
wheelchair access or access for those with limited mobility. We do,
however, provide braille guides to the museum, and can organise
handling activities for blind people. We also have a hearing loop
