ADVANCE TICKETS

What are they?

Advance tickets are single (one-way) tickets offering big discounts on many longer distance journeys. As the name suggests, these tickets must be booked in advance of your journey and are subject to availability.

Is it for me?

If you are able to plan ahead, Advance tickets can offer fantastic value for money. There are limited numbers of Advance tickets, so generally speaking, the earlier you book, the cheaper the ticket - with many tickets going on sale around 12 weeks in advance. Advance fares are usually for longer distance journeys and are sold as single fares, but can be mixed and matched with other Advance, Off-Peak or Anytime Single fares to get the best value tickets for your journey.

What about restrictions?

You must travel on the specific train you have booked and there are no refunds on Advance tickets. However if you have to change the time or date of your journey, you can do this before the departure of the first reserved train printed on your ticket. The difference between the price paid and the cost of the next suitable fare for your journey is payable, plus a £10 administration fee per person per single ticket for each change to the journey.

When can I buy?

Advance tickets must be purchased in advance up to the day before travel and are sold on a first come, first served basis.

What discounts can I get?

If you have a 16-25, Disabled Persons, HM Forces, Family & Friends or Senior Railcard you could get up to 1/3 off your Advance ticket, subject to the restrictions of the Railcard.
